Roche Abbey

Now ruined Roche Abbey is situated in a valley alongside Maltby Beck and King's Wood. Roche Abbey officially was founded in 1147 and by the end of the twelfth century it was completed.

Although now it is presented mainly as ruins, the transepts of the church remain almost to their full height and are a majestic example of the French-influenced early Gothic architecture. Many monastic houses were suppressed in the reign of Henry VIII and Roche Abbey is no exception. What remained from this Abbey is not just low standing walls, but also transepts of the church, which remained almost to the full height.
